Figure Skating

Two skaters

Figure Skating is a vigorous sport that can be enjoyed by everyone whether you skate just for recreation or wish to compete with other skaters. Figure skating can be an individual, pair, or team sport. There are programs for all ages and levels of ability, including freestyle, dance, pair and synchronized skating teams.

Figure skating is wholesome family fun. You'll learn basic and advanced skating skills. Plus, you get the opportunity to perform in competitions and shows. What a great way to see some of the country...and make new friends. The more competitive levels can be very demanding requiring dedication and discipline. Whatever your level...figure skating has a lot to offer.

What is a Freestyle Session?

A freestyle session is a 45, 60, or 90-minute session specifically for figure skaters where the general public is not allowed on the ice. The cost for a freestyle session varies with the time of day and length of session. There is a price break if freestyle sessions are purchased in a minimum quantity of 10-20 sessions at the same time. There are monthly freestyle session calendars available in the rink lobby as well as the Freestyle Schedule page. Going from a public session to a freestyle session can be a scary thing for a young skater. Freestyle sessions are for serious practice; playing should be done on public sessions.

Advantages to a freestyle session:
  • More sessions to choose from
  • Fewer skaters
  • Ability to play program music
  • Use of the full ice surface
  • No restrictions on elements that can be practiced
  • Private lessons available
  • Opportunity to work on program choreography
General rules of etiquette for a freestyle session:
  • The person skating their music has the first right of way
  • Skaters in lessons have 2nd right of way
  • All skaters must take turns playing music (coaches have priority)
  • Be considerate of everyone on the ice
  • Be safe around younger skaters
  • Please exit the ice to talk so you are not in the way of other skaters
